Historical Query Process

The ExcelTools’ Historical Data interface allows you to embed deep historical market information into your spreadsheets with automated data filling methods, and optional unit and currency conversion. ExcelTools provides historical data going back to the early 1970's for most enery data.

When you initiate a Historical query, Excel displays a tabular representation of the data for the contracts you've identified. Data is displayed in each column based on the field choices you make when you set up the query. (Holidays and weekends will show blank cells.)

The Process of Performing a Historical Quotes Query

The process of extracting historical information to your Excel spreadsheet is simple: specify the desired symbols, select the data fields you want, and identify the type and amount of data (time period). Once the query is set, new data is automatically updated into your spreadsheet based on the query settings.

The general process is listed here:

  1. Initiate a Historical query by clicking the History icon.
  2. Select symbols to display.
    1. If you know the specific symbols, enter them directly.
    2. If you don't know the specific symbols, use the Search or Symbol Tree to find them.
  3. If desired, set currency or unit of measure conversions for symbols.
  4. Identify the columns/data fields you wish to display using the field selector.
  5. Identify the type and amount of data you want extracted (Intraday, Daily, Weekly, Monthly, Seasonal. and number of days/weeks/months etc. or date range).
  6. Optionally choose Preferences for the query, display settings such as orientation, headers, sort, missing data options.
  7. Save the query to insert the quoteboard in your spreadsheet. Data is automatically pulled into the spreadsheet as new historical information is received from the exchanges, or is inserted as static data which must be refreshed.
